Poor people did not cause the U.S. deficit, says the Rev. Jim Wallis, chief executive officer of Sojourners, but two-thirds of the cuts in one federal budget proposal are aimed at "modest- and low-income people." The faith community is forming "a circle of protection" around programs that are critical to the well-being of "the poorest and most vulnerable," Wallis says. "That's our job. God gave us that job to do in the faith community." Wallis is a participant and leader in a fasting campaign to call attention to the moral dimensions of the federal budget.
