Sister Acts of Compassion

Over two million people are currently incarcerated in U.S. prisons and jails, and the U.S. incarcerates more youthful offenders than any other country in the world. For more than a quarter-century, Sister Margaret McCabe has worked as a prison chaplain advising young male inmates at the Robert N. Davoren Center on Rikers Island. Day in and day out, she comforts and counsels the boys and men on problems ranging from drug addiction to poverty to domestic abuse. "For me as well as them, I feel I also have the responsibility to challenge them to make the future different," McCabe says.
