Joining a chorus of Catholic voices, the Rev. Thomas Reese, senior fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University, recently sent a letter to Rep. Paul Ryan objecting to Ryan's claim that his Catholic upbringing was reflected in his budget plan. Reese and nearly 90 Georgetown faculty members signed the letter, which asserted that Ryan's proposed budget cuts to programs aiding the poor were not in keeping with church teachings. "This is what Jesus meant when he said that he would judge us by whether we fed the hungry, gave drink to the thirsty, clothed the naked," Reese says. "This is the Christian imperative."
